What's New in Release 4.51
==========================
Connecting to your Mail Server
------------------------------
. You can now leave your mail on the server.
. You can now split the messages you send into smaller pieces.
NOTE Some POP3 Servers do not support message splitting. Check
with your administrator or Internet service provider to see if this
feature is supported by your server.
. You can now connect to your mail server directly from your Mailbox by
clicking the Deliver Mail button.
. You can now check for new messages on a schedule. Set the schedule in
File - Tools - Services, Lotus Mail (Internet Transport), Properties.
Start the schedule by clicking the Connection icon (looks like a buckle)
in the status bar. Click it again to stop checking for new mail on
schedule.
. For Windows 95 and Windows NT 4.0 modem users:
You can now automatically dial in to your mail server via modem with the
Windows AutoDial feature. To see whether you have AutoDial on Windows 95,
look for URL.DLL and SHLWAPI.DLL in your Windows\System directory.
On Windows NT 4.0, look for URL.DLL only. (Windows NT 3.51 doesn't
support AutoDial.) Contact Microsoft if you don't have these files and
you want to use AutoDial.
LDAP (Lightweight Directory Access Protocol) Support
----------------------------------------------------
. You can install Internet Directory Access (LDAP) when you install Lotus
Mail. With Internet Directory Access, you can find many Internet
e-mail addresses outside your organization.
Microsoft Internet Explorer Integration
---------------------------------------
. You can use Lotus Mail as your messaging program with Internet
Explorer. See the readme.txt file in the Browsers directory.
General
-------
. You can run Lotus Mail Release 4.51 on Windows NT 4.0 as well as
Windows 95 and Windows NT 3.51.
. You can install cc:Mail Release 8 for Windows and Lotus Mail on the
same computer, but do not run them at the same time.
. You can search in more than one folder or local archive with a
single search.
. You can search for an attachment if you know its file name or part of
its file name.
. You can print a message with or without attachments.
. You can edit a message in the Outbox the same way you edit a message
in the Drafts folder.
. Lotus Mail is an advanced messaging product. However, some POP3 servers
do not yet support the following Lotus Mail features:
- Message splitting
- Message priority
- Return receipt
- OLE (Object Linking and Embedding)
System Requirements
===================
Lotus Mail Release 4.51 runs on Windows 95, Windows NT 3.51, and
Windows NT 4.0. To run Lotus Mail, you need the following hardware:
. For Windows 95
An 80486 computer with at least 12MB of RAM (16MB recommended).
. For Windows NT
An 80486 computer with at least 16MB of RAM.
For NT 3.51, use Service Pack 5 or higher.
For NT 4.0, use Service Pack 1 or higher. (Service Pack 2 users
should read the note in the "Compatibility Issues" section later
in this readme file.)
. For all systems
A dial-up (modem) or TCP/IP network connection to a POP3 mail
server.
A hard disk with at least 27MB of free space to install and run
Lotus Mail. Additional disk space is required to install other
components, such as Dial-Up Networking, if these components are not
already installed on your computer.
NOTE With a faster computer, more RAM, and more disk space, you'll
experience better performance.
Installing Lotus Mail
=====================
See the "Lotus Mail Release 4.51 Installation and Setup Card" for
instructions on how to install Lotus Mail on Windows 95 and Windows NT
systems, how to install Internet Directory Access (LDAP), and how to
set up dial-up connections.
CAUTIONS!
. DO NOT install cc:Mail Release 7 for Windows and Lotus Mail on the same
computer. Before you install Lotus Mail, uninstall cc:Mail Release 7
from your computer or upgrade to cc:Mail Release 8.
. Your Lotus Mail profile password (the password you enter when you log
in to Lotus Mail) cannot be longer than 10 characters. If you enter a
longer password, you will not be able to change it later. Contact your
mail administrator or Internet service provider for any restrictions
on the length of your POP3 server password (the password you enter
for your POP3 server when you set up Lotus Mail).
. Do not use the same user profile in cc:Mail Release 8 for Windows
and Lotus Mail. All profiles on your computer will be available in
every MAPI-compliant mail program that you use, so you should create
different profiles (with different login names) for different
programs.
NOTES
. Lotus Mail can generate an error log file to help you troubleshoot
problems. To start the log file, see "Creating a log file for
troubleshooting" in Lotus Mail Help.
You must exit from Lotus Mail to view the XPPOP.LOG file, which
resides in your Windows\Temp directory. Double-click XPPOP.LOG to
open it in a text editor.
. When you install on a drive other than C:, the \Lotus\Compnent
directory might be installed on the C: drive.
. When you install Lotus Mail in a directory other than the default
directory, a generic program icon appears instead of the Lotus Mail
icon. To change to the correct icon, right-click the generic icon,
choose change icon, and select the Lotus Mail icon.
Known Problems and Workarounds
==============================
Improving Connection Performance
--------------------------------
. For faster access to your POP3 server, contact your administrator or
Internet service provider to find out how to add a server IP address
to your host file.
Creating Profiles
-----------------
CAUTION!
DO NOT create a profile with the same name as an existing profile
plus a space at the beginning or the end of the profile name. You
might lose both profiles and your Lotus Mail messages.
. You must specify a Lotus Mail password when you create a profile.
This password cannot be longer than 10 characters. If you enter a
longer password, you will not be able to change the password later.
. When you create a profile for Lotus Mail using the Windows Mail
Control Panel, be sure that only "Lotus Mail (Internet Transport)" and
"Internet Directory Access" (if applicable) are selected.
. If you uninstall Internet Directory Access, any profiles that were
using the service will not work until you remove Internet Directory
service from the profile. To remove the service from a profile,
follow these steps:
1. Open the Mail Control Panel.
2. Click Show Profiles.
3. Select the profile from which you want to remove Internet
Directory service and click Properties.
4. Select Internet Directory Access, if it isn't already selected,
and click Remove.
5. Click OK and click Close to close the dialog boxes.
. Profiles that use the Lotus Mail message store and address book
support the features documented in Lotus Mail Help. Profiles that
use a different message store or address book do not support the
complete Lotus Mail features. For example, the Mailbox display and
the information in File - Tools - Services might be different.
Logging in to and Exiting from Lotus Mail
-----------------------------------------
. Wait a minute before restarting Lotus Mail after you exit; otherwise
Lotus Mail might exit unexpectedly.
. Either the rule engine or MAPI spooler might not shut down when you
exit from Lotus Mail. If this happens, press CTRL-ALT-DEL to display
the task list, select RULEENG or MAPISP32, and then select End Task.
Connecting to and Disconnecting from your Mail Server
-----------------------------------------------------
. When you choose a modem connection in Lotus Mail, your Windows system
connection is changed to match it and any programs you run that use
Dial-Up Networking will be affected.
To change the system connection, open the Internet Control Panel,
Connection tab, and select another connection. Or, change the
connection within Lotus Mail by choosing File - Tools - Services,
Lotus Mail (Internet Transport) properties, Connection tab.
. The time interval to automatically disconnect the modem is not enabled.
After downloading your messages, click the modem icon in the taskbar
system tray to close the connection.
. When you specify to connect at startup but your computer is not
connected to your mail server (via modem or network), Lotus Mail
tries to connect for the length of time specified in Connection
Timeout and you cannot cancel this process. When you are not
connected to your mail server, deselect the Connect at startup option.
. If you encounter a problem with your password for your mail server,
it might be related to APOP support.
Lotus Mail automatically detects whether the mail server supports
APOP by checking the server's greeting string at connection time.
If the server supports APOP but your account is not set up to
support APOP, Lotus Mail receives an error message from the mail
server. In this case, you should turn off APOP by choosing
File - Tools - Services, select Lotus Mail (Internet Transport),
Properties, Advanced tab, and deselect Enable APOP detection.
. You must have AutoDial installed if you want to create a new Dial-Up
Networking profile by using the Add button in File - Tools -
Services, Lotus Mail (Internet Transport), Properties.
(See "Connecting to Your Mail Server" in the "What's New" section
of this readme file.)
Creating Attachments
--------------------
. You cannot rename an attachment; it will revert to its original
name. You can save the file under a new name before you attach it.
Reading Messages
----------------
. When you receive a message with an attachment from a UNIX-based mail
client, the file extensions are truncated to 3 characters (for
example, .cshrc becomes .csh).
. When you receive a message sent from Eudora Pro for the Macintosh and
there are at least two attachments including a signature file, the
signature appears in an attachment called TEMP.TXT.
. Lotus Mail does not support uuencode or uudecode. You can save
uuencoded information as a separate file and run the file using a
uudecode program.
. If you try to save an attachment and see the message "Can't save this
file. Error 0," you do not have enough disk space to store this file.
Free up space on the disk, and then try again.
Addressing Messages
-------------------
. When you create a mailing list, the entries in your Lotus Mail Personal
Address Book might disappear. Press F9 to refresh the list.
. If you add recipients to messages and notice that names are
duplicated, your Address box pane is too small. Increase the size of
the pane by dragging the message body pane separator down with the
mouse, and try again.
Addressing Messages with Internet Directory Access (LDAP)
---------------------------------------------------------
. When you add Internet Directory Access to your profile, the Internet
Directory is automatically displayed first when you look up an
address. To display your Lotus Mail Personal Address Book first, open
the Mail Control Panel, click the Addressing tab, enter your password,
and choose Lotus Mail Personal Address Book from the list under "Show
this address book first."
When you address a message, if Lotus Mail can't find the address in
your Lotus Mail Personal Address Book, it searches the Internet
Directory. To avoid searching the Internet Directory, open the Mail
Control Panel, click the Addressing tab, and remove the Internet Directory
entry under "When sending mail, check names using these address lists
in the following order."
. When you look up addresses in an Internet Directory, the directory
controls the timeout setting and how many entries are displayed. The
timeout setting might be different from your Lotus Mail timeout setting.
. When you search for addresses on very large Internet Directories, you
might need to wait a few minutes for your results.
Using the Outbox
----------------
. Lotus Mail might display the message, "There are unsent messages in
your Outbox. Do you want to connect now and send them?" when there are
no messages to send. If this happens often, you can select the option not
to display this message again.
Creating Stationery
-------------------
. Don't include the ampersand (&) when you name stationery.
Using Views
-----------
. When you change the way you sort a view, you must wait until Lotus
Mail is finished sorting your messages. You cannot cancel a sort.
. You can't move messages from the Inbox to the Windows desktop;
copy them instead.
Searching
---------
. Lotus Mail doesn't display a busy cursor when preparing to display
the results of a multi-folder search. Wait a few minutes for the
search to finish. If you click the Search button more than once, your
search results will not become available any sooner and you will open
multiple search results windows.
Printing
--------
. When you print a list of messages, a dot is printed in place of the
urgent (!) or attachment (paperclip) symbol.
Computer Maintenance
--------------------
. Like most Windows products, Lotus Mail makes use of the Windows\Temp
directory. Sometimes Lotus Mail fails to delete temporary directories and
files that are no longer needed. Check your Temp directory occasionally
for directories that have names similar to "00000001.CCT" and files that
have names similar to "DF00.TMP" and delete them.
. If you create an invalid TEMP environment variable, Lotus Mail runs
very slowly.
Compatibility Issues
====================
Using Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 2 and RAS (Remote Access Service)
-------------------------------------------------------------------
. If you installed Service Pack 2 and you already use RAS and a modem
successfully, you can skip the rest of this readme item.
If you use Service Pack 2 and have not yet installed or used RAS,
the Lotus Mail Install wizard will not install RAS. You must
uninstall Service Pack 2, install RAS, and reinstall Service Pack 2.
For more information on the Service Pack 2 patch, see your
administrator or the following Web page:
http://www.microsoft.com/kb/articles/q161/3/68.htm
Using Microsoft Internet Explorer
---------------------------------
. For information about using Lotus Mail Release 4.51 with Microsoft
Internet Explorer, see the readme.txt file in the Browsers directory.
Using Send Mail and SendTo
--------------------------
. File - Send Mail in mail-enabled applications is not supported in this
release; however, SendTo from the desktop is supported.
Using SmartSuite
----------------
. When you send a TeamMail message from a SmartSuite 96 application,
the application exits unexpectedly. However, your message is sent.
Restart your Smartsuite 96 application.
NOTE This problem does not occur when using TeamMail from
SmartSuite 97 applications.
. You can use TeamMail (a feature in Lotus WordPro, Lotus Freelance
Graphics, and Lotus Approach) with Lotus Mail when no VIM-compliant
mailer, such as Lotus Notes or cc:Mail Release 8, is installed on your
computer.
If a VIM-compliant mailer is installed on your computer and you want
to use TeamMail with Lotus Mail, you must make a few changes to your
Windows registry and to WIN.INI.
- To change the Windows registry, start REGEDIT.EXE in your Windows 95
or NT 4.0 directory (REGEDT32.EXE in your Windows NT 3.51 directory).
Open the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Lotus\Components\TeamMail
folder, double-click and then delete the "KeyPath" and
"Application" values.
- To change the WIN.INI file, double-click WINI.INI in your Windows
directory and delete the "Application" and "Program" lines from
the [LotusMail] section.
. When you use TeamMail and send the file as an attachment, the
attachment might use an incorrect name. In 1-2-3 and Word Pro, the
proper file extension is included so the file can be launched.
. When you use TeamMail, you cannot address to a friendly name. You must
use the actual Internet address.
. TeamMail messages might occasionally indicate that they are corrupted.
If this happens, send the message again.
Using Microsoft Outlook
-----------------------
. You cannot use your Lotus Mail profile(s) with Outlook. You must
create a profile for Outlook and change the default profile in
Outlook to point to this profile.
Using Novell NetWare
--------------------
. DO NOT install Lotus Mail to a NetWare directory that does not support
long file names.
. If you are running on a Novell NetWare network, Dial-Up Networking
(a Windows feature) will temporarily disconnect your computer from
all NetWare servers while it establishes a dial-up connection. After
you connect, Dial-Up Networking automatically runs your NetWare login
script to re-establish your server connections.
NOTE If Dial-Up Networking fails to make a connection, your NetWare
connections are not automatically restored. This means that your drive
mappings are invalid until a successful Dial-Up Networking session has
been completed (or until you restart your computer or manually
reattach to all servers). See your Windows documentation for details.
To prevent Dial-Up Networking from disconnecting you from your NetWare
network, follow these steps:
For Windows 95:
1. In the Windows Control Panel, open My Computer.
2. Double-click Dial-Up Networking.
3. Right-click your Dial-Up connection and select Properties.
4. Click Server Type.
5. Deselect "Log on to network", "NetBEUI", and
"IPX\SPX Compatible."
For Windows NT 3.51:
1. In the Remote Access Services program group, open Remote Access.
2. Click Edit, and click Network.
3. Deselect "NetBEUI" and "IPX."
4. Click OK twice.
For Windows NT 4.0:
1. On the Windows Desktop, open My Computer.
2. Double-click Dial-Up Networking.
3. Select a Dial-Up Networking entry and click More.
4. Choose Edit Entry and Modem Properties from the menu.
5. Click Server tab.
6. Deselect "IPX/SPX compatible" and "NetBEUI" protocols.
7. Click OK and Close.
Uninstalling and Reinstalling Lotus Mail
========================================
. If you need to reinstall Lotus Mail, you should uninstall it first.
If you uninstall Lotus Mail, you must also uninstall Internet Directory
Access (LDAP).
. If you are uninstalling both Lotus Mail and cc:Mail Release 8 for
Windows, uninstall Release 8 first. Otherwise, you might not be able
to uninstall Release 8.
. Your Mailbox, profile(s), and some Windows registry information
remain on your system after you uninstall Lotus Mail.
The Windows Uninstall utility does not remove all Lotus Mail registry
information. If you plan to reinstall Lotus Mail, and you prefer a clean
reinstallation, delete the following Lotus Mail registry items in addition
to using the Windows Uninstall utility. This is optional; you can
reinstall without deleting these items.

CAUTION!
Do not remove any items under Components if you have other Lotus
applications, such as Notes, installed on your computer.
